Know the Employer

When I first entered the job market I was told to research the company with whom I was interviewing. Easier said than done. Okay, so that was BW (before web). Today, however, basic information about most companies or organizations is a few searches away.

Why should you learn about the company?

  1. To show interest in working for them
  2. To help develop some questions for the interviewer
  3. To get answers about benefits, etc that may be posted online

So, what can you do:

  1. Go to their web site (and make sure you find the right one)
  2. Search online to find press releases or news stories about the organization
  3. Go to the state's web site to see if they have a section to help people find information about employers (California does).

What are you looking for?

  • Find the organization's product(s) or service(s)
  • Find examples of the their work (e.g. a web design firm)
  • Find a company profile. How old is the company? How many employees?
  • How many locations?
  • Client list.
